2006 American Division Champion Cardinals Season Highlights

2006 American Division Champion Cardinals Team Picture

The Cardinals expected the competition would be tough in 2006, with upstart teams like the Braves, our old nemesis White Sox, and dramatically improved teams like the Pirates, Orioles, and Yankees, all waiting to take the title from the defending champions. We knew 2006 was going to be the toughest campaign yet. In the end it was the Cardinals and Braves left standing to battle for the American Division crown. The Cardinals took the first game of the championship series, 11-1. The Braves fought back to win the second game in extra innings. The final game was a battle to remember. The Braves jumped out first, the Cards battled back and took the lead in the latter stages of the game. The Braves retook the lead in the ninth, but in the bottom of the ninth, timely hitting by Matt Bayne and Phil Young set the stage for Greg Hancock. Greg Hancock's gap shot to right center drove in the tying and winning runs and the Cardinals were champions for the third straight year.
